Empower the next generation of leaders with the YMCA's Model UN and civic engagement programs for teens. Through hands-on experiences in diplomacy, debate, and public service, participants develop critical thinking, leadership, and advocacy skills. Model UN (MUN)
Grades 6-12 | Model UN Introduces students to the operation and structure of the United Nations while providing an opportunity to actively learn about world cultures and debate issues of global importance.
In separate middle and high school programs, students are assigned a country and then research and debate based on their country’s views
The program runs September through December, culminating in a three day conference in Hershey PA at which students from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New York and Connecticut work together to produce and debate solutions.
In New Jersey, students at North Hunterdon and Voorhees High Schools, JP Case, Readington and Old Turnpike Middle School and Clinton Public School participate through school based clubs. Students from other schools can participate as part of a YMCA based group or contact us to start a school at your school.
New Jersey Youth and Government
Grades 6-12 | Youth and Government allows students to take on the role of a New Jersey legislator and propose a bill they believe should become a law in New Jersey. In separate middle and high school programs, students write and refine their bill and learn public speaking and debate.
The program runs January through April, culminating in a three day conference at which students attempt to pass their bills through a model of the New Jersey legislature.

YMCA Changemakers Summit
Grades 9-11 | In this national YMCA program, pairs of students develop an idea that they would like to implement that addresses a need in their community. In January, students submit their ideas to the Changemakers team. From all submitted applications throughout the United States, 40 teams are chosen to attend the Changemakers Summit, during which all teams present to panels of judges. The top 3 teams receive $5,000 each in funding to implement their project.
Applications open January 2027. Teams are informed if they are chosen to attend the Summit in March and have until June to prepare their presentation. Exact time and location of the Summit is to be announced. All travel and lodging expenses are covered by National YMCA.
